So I have decided to make a Puertorican Tiple. It is a small 5 string guitar similar to a ukulele. In-fact the Timple from the Canary Islands may of been the forerunner to the Uke.
Below is a link to the Wikipedia page and a photo from wikipedia on the instrument. There are several variations to the instrument across the island of Puerto Rico. I like the look and size of the Doliente.
The Tiple Doliente has five strings tuned from low to high as E, A, D, G, C. I got this info from: http://www.santiagoramos.com/the-puerto-rican-music-homepage/the-puerto-rican-music-instruments/tiple/thepuertoricantiple-tuning
From that same web site:
C5 |-------- .011 gauge
G4 |-------- .014 gauge
D4 |-------- .023 gauge
A3 |-------- .031 gauge
E3 |-------- .041 gauge
I am going to use ukulele/guitar style construction for mine as I can find no plans online. The other option was to use Puerto Rican Cuatro style construction, which may be more historically accurate, but wasteful with regards to madera(wood).
